Ignitis Renewables is a leading player in the Lithuanian energy sector and part of the international Ignitis Group, which specializes in green energy. As one of the key providers of renewable energy in the Baltic states, the company develops and operates projects in wind, solar, and hydropower. Ignitis Renewables aims to drive the energy transition in the region by combining sustainable solutions with the highest environmental standards. The company is considered a pioneer in utilizing state-of-the-art technologies to merge renewable energy production with biodiversity conservation.
In line with this commitment, Ignitis Renewables has chosen the AVES Wind anti-collision system. This AI-based system will be installed at the Kelmė Wind Farm, the largest wind farm in the Baltic states. The wind farm comprises 44 turbines with a total capacity of 300 megawatts. ProTecBird will install 84 anti-collision systems on 28 of the turbines, covering the entire area. High-resolution cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) enable real-time detection and identification of eight protected bird species, such as the Greater Spotted Eagle, White Stork, and Marsh Harrier. When birds enter a radius of 300–600 meters, the turbines can be brought to a spin mode within 30 seconds to prevent collisions with the rotor blades.
“Protecting biodiversity is a central goal of our sustainability strategy. During our studies at the Kelmė Wind Farm, we identified that endangered bird species inhabit the region. With this system, we are taking an important step to minimize the environmental impact of our projects while aligning the highest environmental standards with efficient energy production,” says Lina Žibienė, Head of Environment and Permitting at Ignitis Renewables.
“We are proud that Ignitis Renewables has selected our AI-driven AVES Wind® anti-collision solution. With this system, we not only support Lithuania’s energy transition but also actively contribute to the protection of bird species and their habitats,” states Thorsten Heinzen, CEO of ProTecBird.
The project highlights the shared vision of Ignitis Renewables and ProTecBird to combine renewable energy with cutting-edge technology and environmental protection.
